Sunscreen is part of everyday life as an Aussie. It saves us from hot, uncomfortable nights tossing and turning from sunburn, prevents premature aging and helps protect us from skin cancer. But how do you choose the safest sunscreen for your family?
We’ve put together this helpful guide explaining the difference between zinc-based sunscreens and chemical sunscreens to help you understand the science behind these two very different products.
What’s the truth about chemical sunscreens?
Did you know that many of the ingredients used in the sunscreens you see in the chemist or supermarket have actually been banned in other countries?
That’s right – last weekend, you might have rubbed in sunscreen that would not be approved for sale in the European Union or even the USA! Studies by the FDA have found that the chemicals found in many standard sunscreens, such as oxybenzone and octinoxate, are able to penetrate the skin and get into the bloodstream, where they can remain for several days.
These sunscreens also have fragrances, preservatives and dyes that can irritate the skin and exacerbate conditions such as eczema and dermatitis. Some have even been found to be contaminated with carcinogens such as benzene, which is the same nasty stuff found in cigarette smoke!
Is zinc-based a safer sunscreen?
Rather than filtering out UV rays via complex chemical reactions, zinc forms a protective physical barrier on the skin’s surface. This reflects and scatters UVA and UVB radiation, along with blue light, keeping your skin safe without exposing you to harmful chemicals.
The zinc oxide we use in our SPF50 zinc-based sunscreen has been certified by the TGA and FDA and is approved for use in the EU, where stringent safety standards apply for skincare products. We use organic ingredients certified by PHARMCHEM Technical Services, and we’re passionate about sourcing only the very best stuff to go into our products.
What makes SParms zinc sunscreens different?
Our zinc-based sunscreen is 100% organic and chemical-free, making it suitable for children and those with sensitive skin. It’s also been dermatologically tested, so it won’t clog your pores or cause breakouts like some brands do.
If you’re a keen eco-warrior trying to do your bit for the environment, you’ll love the fact that our SPF50 sunscreen is totally reef safe. Unlike other brands, which contain nasty chemicals that damage our precious coral reefs, SParms sunscreens have been formulated with people and the planet in mind. They’re also vegan and cruelty-free – we’d never test our products on animals – and the packaging is recyclable.
What about waterproof sunscreen?
Our Sport sunscreen is the perfect choice for those who are out and about, getting active in the sun. It’s water resistant for up to two hours, and the broad spectrum formulation blocks UVA, UVB and UVC blue light, protecting the entire family. With a shelf life of up to three years, it’s great to stash in your beach bag, glove box or at the holiday house, so you’ve always got some sunscreen on hand when you need it.
What about me? I’ve got sensitive skin
Prone to rashes or breakouts, or suffer from headaches when you use scented or synthetic products? Our sensitive sunscreen has been crafted especially with you in mind. With no synthetic fragrances, pesticides, parabens or preservatives, it will protect your skin from the sun and those unwanted skin reactions. And the clear zinc finish means this sunscreen won’t cramp your style, making it great for wearing under makeup.
How can I be sure this sunscreen is safe for my kids?
We all want to protect our kids from the known dangers of sun damage, but what about all the unknowns, like the dangers lurking inside regular commercial sunscreens? The new SParms Kids sunscreen gives your kids SPF 50 protection, minus the nasties. You won’t have to worry about harmful chemicals, preservatives or artificial dyes, and you’ll know you’re protecting our precious environment for generations to come.
Our new sunscreens are the product of years of research, and we’re thrilled to finally be able to introduce Australians to the benefits of swapping chemical concoctions for 100% organic, zinc-based sunscreen with no nasties.
